in washington. while the fed is making a tidy out.it on a controversial about to send that and more out the door. to pump up the economy. >> the financial crisis has a tidy profit for taxpayers. they sold the last remaining shares of insurance giant a.zig today. the company nearly collapsed in 2008 after making risky financial bet. the treasury and the federal reserve came to the rescue, taking it over and backing it with $182 billion. avenue self-ing off the last shares treasury reported $5 billion profit on the bail-out. the federal reserve made $17.7 billion. but the fed won't be parking its cash. it's holding a two-day policy meeting and it is expected to announce tomorrow it will continue to keep interest rates low. but it wants to get them especially lower. for mortgages, car loan and business loan. it is expected to expand one of the major stimulus programs known as quantitative easing. it will buy more treasury bonds from banks and investors for cash. extra $40 billion or so a month. the fed hopes it will create more jobs. >> even though unemployment ticked down there is a reserve of peo

on the road, but also here in washington is really relentless. this is not someone who just flies in and meets with a foreign minister, with a leader or president and has a dinner. this is someone who's constantly going on the road, meeting with civil society groups, meeting with opposition groups. someone who really doesn't slow down, and i think, don, she got this flu, this stomach virus during her last trip, and then it had a cumulative effect from there. she was ill, she was dehydrated, she fainted. she had a concussion, and now we see that she has this blood clot. we were researching a little bit, we did see that in 1998 during the midterm election for her husband, president clinton, she also was treated for a blood clot and wa on blood thenners and was also at the time keeping this hectic pace. so it does seem she has a history with these type of clots, but it is i think over the last few months, she's really been tired. she even said in a recent interview with barbara walters. she said, barbara, i'm really tired. i think that just the last few months have really taken a toll on her, don

the sequester, this term we've been throwing around washington now for about a year and a half. it was the result of that debt budget deal, that ceiling rise in july of 2011. they said if there was no deal to significantly reduce government spending by this time, midnight tonight, then there would be this draconian and indiscriminate cut across the board, 50% of it, $500 billion over ten years in defense, $500 billion over ten years in other social spending, including social safety net programs. everyone was going to feel a little pain. the trouble is now some elements, particularly in the senate, are trying to delay that, put that off, one month, two months, three months, even a year by some estimations, and a lot of folks, particularly republicans in the house, say no way, we're not going for that. we're getting nothing out of this in terms of spending cuts except the sequestration. a lot of ironies here. it was house republicans who literally blamed the president for coming up with the sequestration idea to begin with. they've spent months blaming him. what you saw mitch mcc

the latest in just minutes. good morning from a very busy washington. it's thursday, december 20th, 2012. this is "the daily rundown," the second shortest day of the year. let's get right to my first read. if talks on the fiscal cliff are going to be rescued, they have got to be rescued today. but the more you see the president and speaker boehner talking in public, the less they are talking behind the scenes. leaving negotiations stalled just 12 days before the new year. the speaker is now spending his third day working to pass a bill that will not become law. maybe it will start a framework for a backup plan but it's not going to be a law. and it won't probably be part of any final budget deal. the house will vote today on boehner's plan b which democratic leader harry reid had said will go nowhere in the senate. and the president has promised to veto it if it somehow got to him. in a 52-second, well it was a press conference but he didn't take questions so we'll call it a media availability, boehner dared the president to reject the backup plan that prevents tax hikes on those making

the government. they like to see themselves as outsiders who are only in washington because they want to destroy washington. so mostly when you hear rhetoric like that from the right, it is ideological posturing. if it were a real governing philosophy of the republican party, the government would not always get larger under republican presidents the way it does. but there is one part of government where that sort of attitude, the get it down to the size where you can drown it in the bathtub attitude is not just empty right-ring branding and hyperbole. there is one part of governance at the federal level where the conservative movement has actually succeeded in making government small enough to drown it in the bathroom at home that part of governance still technically exists, but they have hollowed it out and sucked the life out of it. they have made so it weak, it cannot properly function, and nobody expects it to. and you can tell what part of governance they have done this to with one simple test. find any other federal agency in the united states government when on the day that the president
